UPDATE (1/9/13)

Beckett didn’t have a bad night, nor did he really have a good night. The doctors and nurses seem slightly indecisive about the next steps as the surgeon is anxious to close up Beckett’s chest (to decrease the chances of infection), but the other doctors and nurses would like to possibly wait a day to give Beckett a chance to rest a little. Sooo, it may be a fairly uneventful day (yeah right), or they may consider trying to close him up at some point today. Honestly, we have no idea…we just sit and wait. Hope that helps, thanks for the prayers. — with Leah ‘Whiteley’ Rupp at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

UPDATE (1/8/13) -goodnight again-

Sooo, this will be short because we need to get some sleep. :-\ His bleeding has drastically slowed down…Praise The Lord! Please pray for an uneventful/healthy night. Goodnight friends. — with Leah ‘Whiteley’ Rupp at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

UPDATE (1/8/13) -sorry, one more update-

After I just posted my ‘goodnight’ update, we decided to go back and see him one more time to say goodnight. When we arrived, they calmly inform us that his bleeding hasn’t really slowed down since the surgery (and it should have a lil more than it has by now). So I’ve decided to write one more time that he apparently stills needs prayer for some healthy/natural clotting, otherwise they may need to call the surgeon back in tonight.

…..just trying to keep you all posted. Thanks. — with Leah ‘Whiteley’ Rupp at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

UPDATE (1/8/13) -goodnight-

Wow, what a day! We woke up this morning prepared for another day of weaning and ended with a trip to the Cath Lab (it takes about 10 people to move Beckett) a trip to the OR for surgery (#2 now), then back to the PICU (a different room this time) to conclude the evening. Beckett is doing ‘ok’, taking into consideration all that has taken place today for that lil man. He is bleeding some right now (which we are being told is expected when coming from surgery), so the plan for the night is to lessen (or stop) the bleeding and get him stable once again. We are being told that they really want to try to pull him off of Ecmo tomorrow though (which we are so excited about, yet quite scared for). Please pray that he has a ‘good’ night, and a great/successful day tomorrow. Crazy, Crazy, Crazy… And as always, the prayers and support are A.MAZ.ING! Bless you all, have a good night! — with Leah ‘Whiteley’ Rupp at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

UPDATE (1/8/13)

Well, it’s a little after 1:00pm right now and we have just been informed that they will be taking Beckett to the Cath Lab to take more accurate images of Beckets chest/heart. They want to get a better look with hopes to find why Beckett doesn’t seem to ‘want’ to come off of Ecmo completely. There is concern the shunt they put in may have a clot. There are minimum risks to this step, yet there are always risks. Additionally, there is a chance they may not find anything wrong in which they may not then know how to proceed. This is yet another trying time for Beckett, Leah and myself. Maybe it’s just exhaustion, or maybe it’s exhaustion and this ‘one more thing’ lil Beckett now has to go through that has worn us out. We need continual prayer and support (as you all have been so gracious and generous to give). Thank you! (I’ll try to send another update later tonight.) — with Leah ‘Whiteley’ Rupp at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

So they found that Beckett’s shunt is clotted and it needs to be revised. He is currently in the OR to have it replaced. They have said this is probably exactly why he wasn’t able to come off his ecmo machine. It is possible he will be off the machine when he comes out of surgery after they fix it, but that is still unknown. His heart function itself looks good. Keep praying as now he is having another surgery and hoping this should fix the problem. Never been so excited to hear someone has a clot!! This gives us a problem that can be fixed. Praise The Lord! And praying for his continued protection and provision. — with Jonathan Rupp.

Please keep praying for Beckett. They are preparing to take him to the cath lab to make sure his shunt is working. They aren’t quite sure why he is having a hard time coming off ecmo. This is another scary time but God is good. We continue to trust in his faithfulness and his will for Beckett’s life.

UPDATE (1/7/13)

As many of you saw, lil Beckett gave us a precious lil gift this morning by opening his eyes once again as if to say, ‘I’m still here, it’s gonna be ok…try not to loose hope’. ‘Hope’ is a tricky word to appropriately conceptualize. So much of me wants to cling to hope, yet I am trained (in business) to ‘set proper expectations’ or to ‘under-promise and over-deliver’. Naturally I then become afraid to ‘give-in’ to hope as if to set myself up for an even deeper wound if/when hope is assumed. I believe some timidity is a normal and acceptable emotion, but as Moses said to the Israelites, ‘The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still’. Beckett is still stable, but unfortunately he is not yet ready to be taken off of Ecmo entirely. The weaning has gone well, but the gap between its assistance and complete independence is a bit of a leap. We have been warned that tomorrow may be another Psalm 46:10 kind of day, so please continue to hope and pray for the continual strengthening of his heart and body. We are far from over….but Beckett is here to stay! ‘May the best days of our past, be the worst days of our future.’ — with Leah ‘Whiteley’ Rupp at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.
